This 22,000 s.f. mass timber building is a shared amenity space for a group of biotech companies in South San Francisco and includes a café and dining space, lounge, meeting center, fitness facility and private offices. CLT panels are supported by an intricate glulam framing system, allowing the structure to also serve as an exposed wood finish. Elevated installed 20-foot double cantilevered overhangs, which required extensive planning, shoring and temporary support measures. These structures provide outdoor seating areas and solar protection to minimize heat gain, which helps contribute to the project’s net-zero energy goals. The Lighthouse is the only open-to-the-public building in the region built entirely of mass timber and it will serve as an education opportunity for how to build in a more environmentally responsive way. Three crews with six workers completed erection of this innovative project in six weeks and with a total of 1,389 hours worked.
